Your data and progress
No accounts: everything is stored in your browser. What's saved, what can delete it, and how to back it up and restore it.
WANCode has no accounts and no login. Your learning data lives only in the browser you're using — we don't have a copy, and we can't recover it for you. That's good for privacy, and it means backups are your job. The good news: a backup is one click.
What's stored, and where
- IndexedDB
- The browser's built-in database. WANCode keeps your lesson, challenge and project progress, code drafts, playground projects, achievements and an activity history here.
- localStorage
- Small settings: theme (light/dark/system), editor preferences and your language choice.
- wc-locale cookie
- A functional cookie that remembers whether you chose English or Bahasa Melayu, so the right language opens next time. It contains only
enorms, and it isn't used for tracking.
Your code and progress are never uploaded. Your browser still requests WANCode's pages like any website (and that cookie travels with those requests), but nothing you write or complete is sent along.
Autosave
As you type, drafts are saved automatically and the editor shows "Saved on this device". Press Ctrl/⌘ + S if you want to save immediately. If your browser blocks storage (some private modes do), WANCode warns you that progress will be lost when the tab closes.
What can delete your progress
- Clearing your browser's history, cookies or "site data" for WANCode.
- Private / incognito windows — their storage is wiped when the window closes.
- Switching browser or device — each one has its own separate storage.
- Browser clean-up tools, or the browser itself removing data for sites you haven't visited in a while (some browsers, including Safari, can do this).
- Pressing "Clear local progress" on the Progress page (it asks you to type DELETE first).
Back up your progress
- Open the Progress page.
- Press Download learning backup. You get a file like
wancode-backup-2026-10-13.json. - Keep it somewhere safe — cloud drive, email to yourself, USB stick.
The backup is plain JSON. It includes your progress, drafts, playground projects, achievements, activity history and preferences. It may contain code you wrote, so treat it like any personal file.
Restore or move to another device
On the Progress page choose Import a backup and pick the file. WANCode checks it in your browser (it's read as data, never run as code, and never uploaded), shows a summary, then asks how to import:
- Merge with my current progress — keeps everything you have now and adds what's in the backup. Anything completed in either stays completed; for drafts and playground projects, the most recently edited version wins.
- Replace my current progress — deletes the progress in this browser and restores the backup exactly, including its preferences.
Use Merge when combining a laptop and a phone. Use Replace when setting up a fresh browser or undoing a mistake. Not sure? Download a backup of the current browser first — then nothing can be lost.
